Reading

  • Expanding reading interests

  • Look at words as two or more units of sound and pattern as well as meaning.

  • They learn where syllables and morphemic breaks occur in words

  • Able to write longer pieces and for many days

  • Automatically spell most of the words they need for writing

  • More attention to meaning and a voice in their writing

Strategies for parents to support kid in this stage

  • Create a compound word journal 

  • Read with the kids 

  • Brainstorm with the kids a list of problem solving ways when they don’t know how to spell a word.

Strategies to support English Language Learners (ELL)

  • Further explore consonants (especially the silent consonants)

  • Spell check on the computer 

  • Word study the spelling of plural words
